In the life of a believer, even involuntary reflexes are opportunities for worship and mindfulness. Islam provides beautiful guidance on how to handle two common occurrences: sneezing and yawning.
While they may seem similar as sudden physical actions, they hold very different statuses in our faith. Sneezing is considered a blessing—a protective mechanism that clears the respiratory system of dust and harm—necessitating gratitude. Yawning, conversely, is associated with sluggishness and is considered undesirable.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) clarified this distinction:
«Indeed, Allah loves sneezing and dislikes yawning. » (Narrated by al-Bukhari)
Here is the Prophetic etiquette for handling both situations.

إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ
وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ
فَإِذَا قَالَ لَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَلْيَقُلْ: يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ
The Arabic Transliteration
Idhaa ‘aṭasa aḥadukum falyaquli al-ḥamdu lillaahi,
wa-l-yaqul lahu akhoohu aw ṣaaḥibuhoo: yarḥamuka Allaahu,
fa-idhaa qaala lahu: yarḥamuka Allaahu, falyaqul: yahdeekumu Allaahu wa yuṣliḥu baalakum.
The English Meaning
“When one of you sneezes, let him say: Al-ḥamdu lillaah (All praise and thanks are due to Allah).
And let his brother or companion say to him: Yarḥamuka Allaah (May Allah have mercy on you).
Then, if he says to him: Yarḥamuka Allaah, let him say: Yahdeekumu Allaahu wa yuṣliḥu baalakum (May Allah guide you and rectify your state of affairs).”
1. The Etiquette of Sneezing (Tashmeet)
Because sneezing is a relief for the body and a sign of health, it requires specific manners from the one sneezing and those around them.
For the Sneezer:
• Low Volume & Cover: The sunnah is to suppress the sound as much as possible. One should not sneeze loudly or obnoxiously. You must cover your face with your hand, a garment, or a handkerchief.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah regarding the Prophet (ﷺ): «…he would cover his face with his hand or garment, and suppress the sound with it.» (Narrated by at-Tirmidhi)
• Praise Allah: Immediately after sneezing, say “Alhamdu Lillah” (Praise be to Allah).
Variations of Praise: Scholars have noted several authentic versions of this praise:
1. Alhamdu Lillah (Praise be to Allah).
2. Alhamdu Lillah ala kulli hal (Praise be to Allah in all situations).
3. Alhamdu Lillahi Rabb al-Aalamin (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds).
For the Listener (The Reply):
If a Muslim sneezes and praises Allah, it is a duty (and some scholars say obligatory) for those who hear him to reply.
• The Du’a: Say “Yarhamuk Allah” (May Allah have mercy on you).
The Sneezer’s Response:
Upon hearing the prayer for mercy, the sneezer should reply with:
• «Yahdeekumu Allah wa yuslihu balakum» (May Allah guide you and rectify your condition).
• Alternatively: «Yaghfir Allahu lana wa lakum» (May Allah forgive us and you).
2. Important Rulings Regarding Sneezing
Firstly: You only say “Yarhamuk Allah” if the sneezer says “Alhamdu Lillah” first.
Anas ibn Malik narrated that two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet (ﷺ). He prayed for mercy for one but not the other. When asked why, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: «This one praised Allah, but you did not praise Allah. » (Agreed Upon)
Secondly: The Three-Time Limit If a person sneezes repeatedly, you should pray for mercy for them up to three times.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: «If one of you sneezes, let his companion pray for mercy for him, but if he sneezes more than three times, then he has a cold, and the prayer for mercy should not be repeated after three times. » (Narrated by Abu Dawud)
Thirdly: Sneezing During Prayer (Salah) It is permissible to say “Alhamdu Lillah” if you sneeze while praying.
A man sneezed behind the Prophet (ﷺ) during prayer and praised Allah with a beautiful, extended praise. After the prayer, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: «By the One in Whose hand is my soul, thirty-odd angels rushed to see which of them would take it up [record the reward].» (Narrated by at-Tirmidhi).
Fourthly: If a non-Muslim sneezes, we do not pray for mercy (Rahmah) for them, but rather for guidance (Hidayah).
The Prophet (ﷺ) would say to them: «Yahdeekumu Allah wa yuslihu balakum» (May Allah guide you and rectify your condition).
3. The Wisdom Behind the Praise
Why do we praise Allah after a sneeze? The great scholar Ibn al-Qayyim offered a profound insight into the biology and spirituality of the act:
“Because the one who sneezed has enjoyed the blessing and benefit of releasing some vapours trapped in his head which, if they had remained, would have caused him some serious troubles, it is prescribed for him to praise Allah for this blessing and for his body remaining in the same shape and form after this convulsion, which is for the body like an earthquake for the land.”
The Etiquette of Yawning
Unlike sneezing, yawning is from the Shaytan and signifies laziness or heaviness. Therefore, the etiquette focuses on suppression and containment.
• Suppress It: Try to stop the yawn as much as possible, especially if you are in prayer.
• Do Not Make Sound: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned that when one makes a sound like “aah” while yawning, the Shaytan laughs.
• Cover the Mouth: If you cannot suppress it, you must place your hand over your mouth.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: «When one of you yawns, let him put his hand over his mouth, lest the Shaytan enter it.» (Narrated by Muslim)
The scholars explain that covering the mouth prevents the Shaytan from achieving his goal of distorting the believer’s face and entering their mouth to cause distraction.
