This course provides a comprehensive and detailed study of Islamic principles and practices, as outlined in the Nigerian Basic Education Curriculum for Junior Secondary Schools. The curriculum is structured around four major themes: Qur’an and Hadith, Tawhid and Fiqh, Sirah, and Tahdhib (Moral and Social Education). Students will deepen their understanding of Islam by studying key Surahs and Hadith, learning about the Attributes of Allah and the Pillars of Islam (including the detailed performance of Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj), and exploring the historical development of Islam and the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The course also places a strong emphasis on the practical application of Islamic teachings to daily life, promoting virtues, good character, and responsible citizenship within the Nigerian context. The goal is to produce well-rounded individuals who are not only knowledgeable about their faith but also contribute positively to society.
Target audiences
- This course is designed for students in Junior Secondary School (JSS 1-3), typically within the age bracket of 10 to 15 years. It is an essential subject for Muslim students within the Nigerian education system, aiming to solidify their understanding of their faith and its role in their personal development and in the wider society.
Requirements
- As part of the compulsory Religion and National Values (RNV) curriculum for the Junior Secondary level, this course has no formal prerequisites beyond having successfully completed primary education. Students are expected to have a foundational understanding of the basics of Islam. A key requirement is a willingness to engage critically with the subject matter, participate in class discussions, and apply the moral and ethical lessons to their personal lives. The course prepares students for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and therefore requires diligence and a commitment to academic study and memorization of key texts.
