Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah
The names and attributes of Allah are numerous and uncountable. All these attributes are beautiful. Out these numerous names, there are ninety-nine (99) which whoever commit them to memory, believes in them, acts by them and supplicates to Allah with them will enter Paradise.
The first fifteen of Allah’s names as contained in Suratul Hashr (chapter 59:22-24)
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ عَٰلِمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَٱلشَّهَٰدَةِۖ هُوَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ٢٢ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِي لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱلۡقُدُّوسُ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُ ٱلۡمُهَيۡمِنُ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡجَبَّارُ ٱلۡمُتَكَبِّرُۚ سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ ٢٣ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُ ٱلۡبَارِئُ ٱلۡمُصَوِّرُۖ لَهُ ٱلۡأَسۡمَآءُ ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ ٢٤
Translation: Surah 59(Al-Hashr, Ayat 22-24)
22. He is Allah, beside Whom La ilaaha ilia Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
23. He is Allah beside Whom La ilaaha ilia Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allah! (High is He) above all that they associate as partners with Him.
24. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names.All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
EXPLANATIONS
Allah has many beautiful names. Each name tells us something special about who He is and how He takes care of us.
1. Allah – The True God / The Almighty
This is the most special Name. Allah is the only one we should worship. He is powerful over everything.
2. Ar-Rahman – The Most Beneficent
Allah is very kind to everyone, whether they believe in Him or not.
3. Ar-Rahim – The Most Merciful
Allah shows extra love and mercy to those who believe in Him and try to do good.
4. Al-Malik – The Sovereign King
Allah is the King of all kings. He owns and controls everything in the world.
5. Al-Quddus – The Holy One
Allah is pure and perfect. He has no mistakes, no faults, and nothing bad can be connected to Him.
6. As-Salaam – The Source of Peace
Allah gives peace and safety to His creation. He also brings peace to our hearts.
7. Al-Mu’min – The Guardian of Faith
Allah protects the believers and keeps their faith strong.
8. Al-Muhaimin – The Protector / Granter of Security
Allah watches over everything. He protects us from harm and danger.
9. Al-‘Azeez – The Mighty
Allah is strong and powerful. No one can defeat or challenge Him.
10. Al-Jabbar – The Compeller
Allah can make anything happen, even when no one else can. He fixes problems and corrects mistakes.
11. Al-Mutakabbir – The Supreme / The Majestic
Allah is greater than everything. He is high above all creation and deserves full respect.
12. Al-Khaliq – The Creator
Allah created everything in the universe, from people to animals, the earth, and the stars.
13. Al-Baari’ – The Maker / The Evolver
Allah not only created things, but He made each one with a special shape, purpose, and system.
14. Al-Musawwir – The Fashioner
Allah designed everything beautifully – every person, flower, and animal looks just how He wanted it.
15. Al-Hakeem – The Wise
Allah is full of wisdom. Everything He does is for a good reason, even if we don’t understand it at first.
Lessons from the Beautiful Names of Allah
1. We should only worship Allah.
From the Name “Allah”, we learn that only He is the true God. No one else deserves our worship.
2. Be kind and merciful to others.
From Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim, we learn to show kindness and mercy to our family, friends, and everyone around us.
3. Trust that Allah is in control.
From Al-Malik (The King), we learn that Allah rules everything. We should trust His decisions in our lives.
4. Try to stay clean and pure.
From Al-Quddus (The Holy One), we learn that we should keep our hearts, words, and actions clean.
5. Spread peace and avoid fighting.
From As-Salaam (The Source of Peace), we learn to bring peace to others, be calm, and avoid hurting people.
6. Have strong faith in Allah.
From Al-Mu’min (The Guardian of Faith), we learn to believe in Allah and let Him protect our faith.
7. Feel safe knowing Allah is always watching over us.
From Al-Muhaimin (The Protector), we learn that Allah is always there, so we don’t need to be afraid.
8. Remember that Allah is more powerful than anyone.
From Al-‘Azeez and Al-Jabbar, we learn that no matter how strong people seem, Allah is stronger.
9. Respect Allah’s greatness and stay humble.
From Al-Mutakabbir, we learn to respect Allah’s greatness and not become proud or boastful.
10. Believe that everything Allah does is wise and for a good reason.
From Al-Hakeem (The Wise), we learn to be patient and trust that Allah knows what’s best for us.
Significance of attributes of Allah
1. They are beautiful names
2. They teach that only Allah deserves our worship.
3. Allah is the Lord of the whole Universe.
4. Allah is pure and free from all evils and impurities.
5. Allah is the sources of peace and true peace originates from Him alone.
6. It is Allah that saves us from dangers.
7. No one can resist Allah’s wishes on His servants.
8. Allah is the Originator and Designer of the heavens and earth.
9. Allah fashions His creatures in the best forms.
10. Muslims should use Allah’s names to seek His bounties.
11. We can name our children by any these attributes but it must be preceded by ‘Abd which means servant of or worshiper of.
