The month of Ramadan is a time of immense spiritual opportunity, culminating in a single night that holds more value than a lifetime of worship. This night is Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree or Power), a night so significant that Allah revealed an entire Surah (chapter) of the Quran dedicated to it.In this blog post, we will explore the profound virtues of this blessed night, its signs, and how to best seek its rewards, drawing upon the insights from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, a classic commentary of the Quran.
1. The Night the Quran Descended

Ibn Abbas explained the nature of this revelation:The Quran was sent down all at once from the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz) to the House of Might (Baytul-`Izzah) in the lowest heaven during this night.From there, it was revealed in parts to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over twenty-three years.This night is also described as a “blessed night” and it exclusively occurs within the month of Ramadan.
2. Better Than a Thousand Months
To emphasize the majesty of this night, Allah asks:“And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr is?” (Surah Al Qadr 97:2) He then answers:“The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months.” (Surah Al Qadr 97:3)
This verse highlights the unparalleled value of worship during this time. Any act of worship performed on Laylatul Qadr—whether prayer, charity, or recitation—is equivalent to performing that act for a thousand months (over 83 years).The Prophet ﷺ further emphasized this, stating that during Ramadan, there is a night better than a thousand months, and “Whoever is deprived of its good, then he has truly been deprived”.
3. Forgiveness of Past Sins
For those who seek it sincerely, Laylatul Qadr offers a clean slate.The Prophet ﷺ said:“Whoever stands (in prayer) during the Night of Al-Qadr with faith and expecting reward (from Allah), he will be forgiven for his previous sins.” This immense promise requires two conditions: faith and the expectation of reward from Allah alone.
4. The Descent of the Angels and Peace
During this night, the earth experiences a massive descent of heavenly beings.“Therein descend the angels and the Ruh by their Lord’s permission with every matter.” (Surah Al Qadr 97:4)
The Angels: They descend in abundance, bringing blessings and mercy, just as they do when the Quran is recited. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that the angels on earth that night are “more numerous than the number of pebbles”.The
Ruh: This refers specifically to the angel Jibril (Gabriel).
The Decree: It is during this night that the matters for the coming year are determined, including lifespans and provisions.The night is characterized by profound tranquility:“There is peace until the appearance of dawn.” (Surah Al Qadr 97:5)
According to scholars like Qatadah and Ibn Zayd, this means the night is entirely good, with no evil in it until Fajr. The angels even greet the worshippers with peace in the Masjids throughout the night. It is also a night of security where Shaytan cannot cause harm.
5. When is Laylatul Qadr?
The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is hidden, encouraging continuous worship throughout the end of Ramadan. However, the Prophet ﷺ provided guidance on when to seek it:The Last Ten Nights: The most emphasized period to search for it is the last ten nights of Ramadan.
The Odd Nights: Within the last ten nights, it is most likely to fall on an odd night: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th.
Moving Around: Some scholars, including Abu Qilabah and others, suggest that the night may move around from year to year among these last ten nights.
Signs of the Night
The Prophet ﷺ described specific signs to recognize Laylatul Qadr:The night is pure, glowing, tranquil, and calm, neither too hot nor too cold.No shooting stars are permitted until morning.The morning following Laylatul Qadr, the sun rises smooth and without rays, resembling a full moon.
6. The Recommended Supplication (Dua)
While all forms of supplication are encouraged during the last ten nights, there is a specific prayer taught by the Prophet ﷺ for Laylatul Qadr.Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet ﷺ what she should say if she encounters the night. He replied, say:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
“O Allah! Verily, You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”
