1. The Linguistic Meaning
In the Arabic language, the word aqeedah (عَقِيدَة) is derived from the root word al-aqd (الْعَقْد). This refers to the act of tying, securing, and pulling with strength. Aqd (tying) is the direct opposite of hall (undoing).
Think of other words from this same root, which emphasize a firm and binding commitment:
• Uqdat al-Yamin: A binding oath.
• Uqdat an-Nikah: The tie of marriage.
These are not casual agreements; they are firm knots. Allah (SWT) uses this root in the Qur’an to describe intentional, binding oaths:
“…But He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended [‘aqqadtum] of oaths…” (Surah al-Ma’idah, 5:89)

The vital importance of this subject is clear from the various names the Salaf (the righteous early generations of Muslims) used to describe it. These synonyms, which each highlight a different aspect of our creed, include:
• Tawhid: The core and essence of Aqeedah, affirming the Oneness of Allah.
• Sunnah: As the correct Aqeedah is derived from and follows the path of the Prophet (ﷺ).
• Usul ad-Deen: The “principles” or “foundations” of the religion.
• Al-Fiqh al-Akbar: “The Greater Understanding,” as understanding belief is greater than understanding the branches of law (fiqh).
• Eeman: Faith itself, as Aqeedah forms the pillars of our Eeman.

The Sound Aqeedah is the firm and certain belief in:
1. Allah: Believing in His Lordship (He is the only Creator, Sustainer, and Commander), His Divinity (He is the only one worthy of worship), and His Names and Attributes as they are described, without distortion, denial, or comparison.
2. His Angels
3. His Books
4. His Messengers
5. The Last Day
6. His Divine Decree (Qadr): Both the good and the bad of it.
It also includes firm belief in everything mentioned in the sound religious texts regarding the principles of religion, matters of the unseen (al-ghayb), and all that we have been told about past, present, and future.

Finally, it is not enough to simply know these points. The defining characteristic of a sound Aqeedah is that it is held in the heart in a definitive manner, with no doubt or uncertainty.
This is the very definition of a true believer that Allah provides in the Qur’an:
[The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not] (Surah al-Hujurat, 49:15)
