This hadith warns against forming negative assumptions or suspicions about others without any evidence. The Prophet (peace be upon him) describes suspicion (al-Dhann) as the “falsest of speech” because it’s a form of lying in the heart that leads to slander and false accusations on the tongue.

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ – رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ – أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: “إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ، مَا يَتَبَيَّنُ فِيهَا، يَزِلُّ بِهَا فِي النَّارِ أَبْعَدَ مِمَّا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ. (مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ)
Translation (meaning)
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Indeed, a servant may utter a word he gives no thought to, and because of it, he will fall into the Fire further than the distance between the East and the West.” (Agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim)
Brief Explanation
This hadith serves as a severe warning about the power and danger of the tongue. A person might say something carelessly, without realizing its grave consequences, such as mocking, spreading gossip, telling a lie, or slandering someone. Such a word, spoken thoughtlessly, can lead to their downfall in the Hereafter. This is a call for Muslims to be mindful of everything they say.
This is related to the Quran’s emphasis on good speech: Surah Qaf (50:18): “He does not utter any word except that with him is an observer, ready [to record].”
Another hadith from the Prophet (peace be upon him) states: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari & Muslim). This highlights the importance of controlling the tongue as a sign of faith.
